Gaming - a new therapy for mental health conditions?
Research for some time has proclaimed that playing certain computer games over a period of more than 2 months can improve brain capacity, brain growth and combat certain neural degenerative conditions.
The science behind this suggests that the need to use spatial memory in playing certain 3D platform games builds a map in the brain that increases brain mass which in turn leads to improvements in degenerate brain function.
Now the use of bio-metric and neuro-censors are being used to create a virtual reality game that would allow someone to experience the world of someone suffering from severe mental health. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrafice is the creation of a collaboration between Tameem Antoniades and a Cambridge Neuroscientist Paul Fletcher.
It is hoped that projects such as Hellblade will enable further exploration of the workings and function of the brain which in turn, is hoped will create new therapies for mental health disorders using advanced sensors to capture psychological data.
